Apart from the theoretical knowledge ,an education institution also aims to develop social skills and soft skills among the students. An exhibition is a wonderful tool that caters the entire requirement at the same time.
The Sullamussalam Oriental School Exhibition (SOEX) was an edutainment programme which played a crucial role in connecting the school with society. It started in the year 1974 and the last SOEX was held in 2012. The renowned institutions like ISRO, CWRDM, KFRI, KSTM Thiruvananthapuram, NIT Calicut, Government Medical College Kozhikode, Kerala Police, Indian Territorial Army, CMFRI etc. set up their stalls in the exhibition which attracted thousand of students and natives. Later the SOEX became a festival of the locality.
Re-enacting of DANDI MARCH on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahathma Gandhi was an innovative step that the SOHSS made under the banner of NSS to spread the principles of secularism, socialism and democracy in the present relevant scenario. Well known Gandhiyan Dr. Chacha Sivarajan donned the role of Mahathma Gandhi. The students began the march from Sabarmathi Ashram set up near Areekode MSP Camp. Thousands of local people too joined the march and ended at the Chaliyar river basin at Thazhathangadi where Gandhiji symbolically made salt by evaporation .
The students of SOHSS presented an ever memorable experience to their grandparents on the International day for Elderly People 2018. The programme was titled ‘Uppilitta Ormakal’ and the grandparents were welcomed to the school with flowers and traditional dances like Oppana, Kolkali etc performed by the students. Their experiences were shared and they were given prizes. They were given feast with traditional food items like Vattappoola, Eenthumpudi, Chakkakoottan, Innikambu etc. Sri. E.T. Mohammed Basheer. M.P was the chief guest of the event.
The food festival named ‘Koottaymayude Kaipunnyam’ became a unique event to raise fund in large scale for the project ‘Sahapadikkoru Veedu. More than 20,000 people visited the food fest and around 25 lakh rupees was collected within 5 hours by selling the dishes .
The mega festival had so many stalls dividing the show into such sections as Live Kitchen, Ishal Thakkaram, Usthad Kushini and Naattu Chanda.
Separate stalls were allotted to each class and parents with their children arranged them with varieties of delicious food. The people flew in to the school not only to taste the oriental dishes, but also to become a part of the humanitarian scheme. It became a feather in the cap of SOHSS in its ongoing success story.
Sahapadikkoru Veedu is a project under the NSS Unit. Six houses were built for the poor students under this scheme and a 7th house is in progress at Therattammal, Urangattiri.
The school always takes initiatives to connect educational values with nature and the neighbourhood, through small scale farming by students. The student volunteers under NSS, JRC, SCOUT & GUIDES plant rice seeds over one acre paddy field at Chaalipadam–Velleri in Areekode every year. The last year, they planted Gandakashala biriyani seed with the purpose of serving biriyani in the proposed farewell party for the 10th and 12th class students. The party was cancelled due to the Covid-19 and the seeds were distributed among the nearby farmers. The collected amount Rs.31430/- was donated to the CM Relief Fund. Many eminent personalities like Adv. V.S. SunilKumar, the Hon. Minister for Agriculture, Kadannapally Ramachandran, the Hon. Minister for Port and Museum, E.T. Mohamed Basheer M.P, V.T. Balram MLA etc. have reached here as chief guests for Koithulsavam held in every year.
Fest O Let – Festival of Letters became the festival of Areekode with the variety programmes and the participation of public. It was held from 20 - 22 September 2019 in the school campus and the leading publishers in Kerala participated the book fair with thousands of books. Cultural eves added the attraction of the programme. The book fair was planned to conduct as an extended activity to the celebrated ‘10 Book Challenge’
'Each child should read at least 10 books during the summer vacation'. It was the motto of the 10 Book Challenge led by ASPIRE ACADEMY. 2,000 students in the school received the challenge and it became a 20,000 book challenge. The official declaration of the programme was done by Mr. Gopinath Muthukad, the renowned magician and motivational speaker in Kerala.
The global alumni meet held on 25th december 2019 was an incredible reunion of its alumni, teachers and staff members from 1955 to 2018 at the school campus. Around 7000 former students attended the meet. Prof. C Raveendranath. the honourable minister for education inaugurated the programme. A visual presentation of our new building project which estimates 8 crore rupees developed by the alumni committee was presented on the occasion.
M CUBE , the renowned motivation programme blended with magic was held at the school to raise fund for the renovation of the sohss stadium located at Therattammel in Urangattiri. Mr. Gopinath Muthukad led the programme and around one thousand families participated in it. An amount of 4 lakh rupees was collected and utilised for the initial renovation activities of the stadium.
